Health & Hygiene Tips For Safe Sterilisation
Essential health and safety tips for using your steriliser
Sterilise bottles before every use for babies under 3 months. After 3 months, once daily sterilisation is generally sufficient. Follow your healthcare provider's advice.
High-temperature steam naturally kills bacteria, viruses, and fungal spores without chemicals. Do not add cleaning agents to the steriliser.
Inspect bottles before each sterilisation cycle. Replace any cracked or damaged bottles immediately, damaged bottles cannot be safely sterilised.
After sterilising, bottles remain sterile for up to 24 hours if left in the closed unit. Once removed and exposed to air, re-sterilise before use.
Sterilise breast pump parts (flanges, valves, bottles) regularly to help prevent infections, especially when pumping multiple times daily.
In hard water areas, descale every 2 weeks using a simple white vinegar rinse to prevent limescale build-up on the heating element.
Allow steam to fully dissipate before opening the unit after a cycle. The interior will be hot, handle with care.
For milk warming, always test temperature before feeding. Gently swirl warmed milk and test on the inside of your wrist. Never microwave breast milk.
Standing at the sink at midnight, shouldn't be part of early parenthood.

THE BOTTLE STERILISER BUYING DECISION
When you're sleep-deprived and have no idea what to do about bottles, here's what actually matters:
| Method | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Method 1: Hand-washing Free |
Cheapest but tedious. "Washing bottles by hand is the most tedious thing imaginable." Many parents describe standing at the sink, seeing the pile, and literally crying. No guarantee germs are killed. Anxiety high. |
| Method 2: Boiling Free |
Works but slow (20+ min), requires monitoring, and bottles can warp. Not practical when you're exhausted. |
| Method 3: Milton tablets £3-5/month |
Cheap ongoing cost but requires overnight soaking. Doesn't dry bottles. Doesn't solve the mental load. Chemicals smell. |
| Recommended Method 4: Electric steriliser £154.99 |
Proven steam kills germs. Hands-free. Auto-drying. One-touch. Saves hours every week. Eliminates anxiety. Worth every penny. |

Frequently Asked Questions
If you're exclusively breastfeeding with no bottles or pump parts, you may need it less often. But if you pump at all, even occasionally a steriliser is invaluable. Pump flanges, valves, and collection bottles need regular sterilisation. If you introduce bottles at any point, it becomes essential.
Many parents who planned to exclusively breastfeed end up pumping, having the steriliser ready removes the panic of needing one urgently.
Yes. High-temperature steam kills bacteria, viruses, and fungal spores including thrush (Candida). This is the same sterilisation method used in medical and food-safety settings. The remaining trace amounts after a full steam cycle are clinically negligible for healthy babies.
No. Steam is gentle on standard bottles, silicone teats, and medical-grade plastic pump components. Always inspect bottles before sterilising and discard any with cracks or damage, damaged bottles cannot be safely sterilised regardless of method.
Up to 24 hours if they remain inside the closed unit unopened. Once removed and exposed to air, they begin to accumulate bacteria (as any sterilised surface does). Keep bottles inside the unit until the moment you need them for best results.
Yes. Use the separate pump parts compartment for flanges, valves, and small components. Use the main 4-bottle rack for bottles. Everything sterilises and dries in one cycle.
Tap water works perfectly. In hard water areas, descale the heating element every 2 weeks with a white vinegar rinse to prevent limescale build-up. Using distilled water reduces descaling frequency but is entirely optional.
Yes. The warming function gently heats breast milk to a safe temperature without overheating or damaging its nutritional properties. Always test the temperature before feeding by dripping a few drops on the inside of your wrist. Never use a microwave to warm breast milk.
The unit is compact at 24cm × 14cm × 19cm and fits on most kitchen counters. If space is very limited, it can be stored in a cupboard between uses, the 24-hour sterile storage means you don't need to leave it out permanently.
